THC vs CBD
Today I will talk to you about a fundamental topic to start understanding Cannabis Light, starting from a fundamental difference between Classic Marijuana which is found for example in Holland or Spain and the Italian or French Legal Weed.
THC (scientific name delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of the largest and best known active ingredients of cannabis and can be considered the progenitor of the phytocannabinoid family.
It is a psychotropic substance (commonly called "high") produced from cannabis flowers, it can be ingested, commonly smoked or inhaled thanks to a vaporizer.
With pain-relieving properties (there are various drugs that contain it), euphoric, anti-nausea, antiemetic, anti-kinetotic, stimulating appetite, which lowers intraocular pressure, and is capable of lowering aggression.
A little science
THC has been shown to interact with the endorphin system and in particular with opioid receptors, causing the release of dopamine and generating the typical sensation of cannabinoid pleasure.
It can cause in the person sensations of euphoria, relaxation, altered space-time perception; auditory, olfactory and visual changes, anxiety, disorientation, fatigue, and stimulation of appetite.
The binding of cannabinoids to CB1 receptors causes a presynaptic inhibition of the reuptake of various neurotransmitters and a stimulation of gray matter areas, which in turn inhibit the ascending nerve pathways of pain.
At the level of the spinal cord, the binding of cannabinoids to the CB1 receptors causes an inhibition of the afferent fibers at the level of the dorsal horn, and at the peripheral level the binding of cannabinoids with the CB1 and CB2 receptors causes a reduction in the secretion of various proinflammatory hormones, inhibition of substance P and therefore of the pain signal.
The appetite stimulation mechanism is believed to be the result of THC activity in the hypothalamic-gastrointestinal axis. The activity of CB1 in the hunger centers of the hypothalamus increases the palatability of food when the levels of the hunger hormone increase following the entry of food into the stomach.
Beyond the heated discussions and social and political controversies about the use of hemp as a drug, it must be considered that it has been an important medicinal plant for thousands of years. THC-based drugs are now on the market in several countries.
Potential fields of therapeutic use of cannabis derivatives:
- nausea and vomiting on chemotherapy
- appetite stimulation in AIDS
- multiple sclerosis
- pain therapy
- brain trauma
- Tourette's syndrome
- brain, prostate, breast, lung cancer
- rheumatoid arthritis
- chronic inflammatory bowel diseases
Drugs that contain a synthetic version of some of the active ingredients in cannabis are being tested around the world.
Over time, cannabis for pharmaceutical use is being legalized in most Western countries, many pharmaceutical companies are acquiring authorizations to produce drugs for use in the most varied fields and in the most varied formats. From pill sprays to the classic form to smoke or vape.
In Italy in 2010 the Senate granted authorization for the production of cannabinoid-based drugs, including THC. Until then, all cannabis-based medicines were bought from foreign countries. In 2014, the Farmalabor company was authorized by the Ministry of Health to wholesale cannabis-based herbal preparations. The products are sold to private and hospital pharmacies for the preparation of magisterial preparations on the doctor's prescription.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a metabolite of Cannabis sativa. It has relaxing, anticonvulsant, antidistonic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effects, promotes sleep and is soothing against anxiety and panic. It has also been shown to reduce intraocular pressure and is a promising atypical antipsychotic.
CBD is the acronym for cannabidiol, a metabolite of the most famous Cannabis, of which it is the second most abundant substance, after THC. Unlike this, however, CBD is not psychoactive, does not create addiction and has remarkable relaxing, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving abilities, so much so that it arouses increasing interest from the scientific community.
Thanks to its therapeutic potential, it is used for the treatment of various problems and is the substance to which we refer when we talk about "therapeutic Cannabis", in Italy the same term is also used for Classic Cannabis with THC
A little science
Cannabidiol has a low affinity for cannabinoid receptors but acts as an indirect antagonist of these receptors. It can enhance the effects of THC and extend the duration of its effect.
It has also been observed to act as a partial receptor of a specific molecule, thanks to this interaction it can be associated with the antidepressant, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective effects of cannabidiol.
Research suggests that CBD can exert some of its pharmacological actions through the inhibition of a particular enzyme. The enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of anandamide, one of the main endocannabinoids produced by the body. It has also been speculated that some of the CBD metabolites may have effects that contribute to the biological activity of CBD itself.
Unlike its sibling THC, CBD is gaining much more worldwide fame due to the fact that it has no psitropic effects. In fact, in many European and world countries, Cannabis Light and its derivatives are already widely used and marketed.
The important thing is that it keeps the THC concentrations in it low.
THC vs CBD
In the previous lines I have carefully described THC and CBD separately, now I wanted to explain their interaction what effects it produces and a fundamental thing that few people say and few know that unfortunately many traders use to deceive their customers.
A little science
The combination of THC and CBD offers numerous benefits. The two cannabinoids seem to work in perfect harmony, and together they can also mitigate the high. One of the simplest ways to consume both molecules simultaneously is through the traditional practice of smoking. Choose a strain that contains THC and CBD in equal doses, and smoke it. These types of genetics offer an ideal amount of THC to activate receptors and a similar level of CBD to mitigate possible unwanted effects.
The synergistic understanding between THC and CBD surpasses anecdotal testimonies. An article published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in 2012 looked at CBD's ability to inhibit paranoia and memory disturbances associated with THC intake.
Furthermore, several scientific studies point out that the two cannabinoids are able to produce amplified effects under certain conditions, when used together.
A randomized, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management demonstrated the synergistic action of THC and CBD on a group of patients. Compared to the placebo group and those who received only THC, the volunteers who were given a mix of THC and CBD showed improved sleep and relief from malaise.
Several animal studies indicate that THC and CBD work in combination. A paper published in 2019 in Frontiers in Pharmacology analyzed the effects of the two cannabinoids on hyperactivity patterns in zebrafish.
The researchers tested different THC: CBD ratios, finding the 1: 1 ratio was the most effective. Although distant from humans, these models suggest the efficacy of the two joint cannabinoids on different conditions.
The aforementioned researches represent a small portion of the studies carried out to date. Although in the preliminary stage, they provide us with a rather definite picture of the potential of the entourage effect.
As mentioned in the previous lines, the perfect ratio is 1 to 1, to get the best benefits of both cannabinoids.
But now their maximum ratio that they can have, to be able to take effect is 1 to 25 even inversely. Example an inflorescence with 1% THC can have a maximum of 25% CBD and vice versa.
Having said this, it immediately makes it clear that in Italy many traders sell chemically impossible products with 25% or 30% of CBD, but how is it possible if in Italy the maximum limit of THC can be 0.5%?
It means that the maximum concentration that can be had at a natural level is 0.5% THC and 12.5% CBD.
My friends beware of those people who sell you percentages higher than these, because they are absolutely false, always ask them for the analysis.
This part refers to Cannabis Light and Hashish Light, the other derivatives such as CBD oil and Moonrock are different.
