Fibrosis and CBD


Cystic fibrosis is a metabolic disease. It is caused by the mutation of the genes responsible for the cellular transport of salt and water.

This abnormal and unwanted condition produces thick, rather than watery secretions. A possible cure is not known, but thanks to cannabinoids, especially the CBDis simply trying to slow the disease process or relieve the patient's pain.

Conditions associated with cystic fibrosis

Lung damage is the result of the secretion of thick mucous membranes that block the airways, causing difficulty in breathing, chronic cough, easy bacterial overgrowth and even possible pneumonia.

In the later stages of the disease, changes in tissue architecture give rise to asthma, bloody cough, increased blood pressure, cardiorespiratory complications and sometimes death.

The gastrointestinal tract also has thick secretions, mainly produced by the pancreas, the part of the body responsible for the production of digestive juices, which allow the breakdown of food.

These condensed leaks clog the pancreatic ducts, blocking digestive enzymes inside the intestine and causing difficulties in absorbing nutrients.

As a result, patients often suffer from osteoporosis, diarrhea and poor growth. In addition, the accumulation of excretory fluids inside the pancreas generates recurrent abdominal pain, swelling, diabetes and life-threatening consequences.

There is no cure for cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis doesn't have a cure yet. However, attempts are made to relieve the patients' symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

What studies say about the cannabis medical and cystic fibrosis?

A study by the Ariel University Center in Samaria, Israel, showed that an imbalance of fatty acids is associated with cystic fibrosis and, since endocannabinoids are derivatives of fatty acids, the endocannabinoid system also has imbalances.

They are studying various cannabinoids to treat cystic fibrosis, such as the cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. Its anti-inflammatory effect could prevent inflammation in the lungs or digestive tract, while still relieving pain.
