Fibriomyalgia and CBD

Introduction

Today we are talking about a very touching topic for me, because I have close relatives who suffer from this nasty disease that now afflicts almost 2% of the world population.

We are talking about Fibromyalgia, a disease of the nervous system that causes chronic pain and inflammation in the whole body.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds present in the hemp sativa L plant and are extracted through their flowers, the so-called cannabis. These help regulate processes in the human body, many of which are involved with the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

There are three classes of these cannabinoids:
  • Phytocannabinoids - found in plants
  • Endocannabinoids - found in the human body
  • Synthetic cannabinoids - made by man, do not exist in nature.
Among these compounds, the two most studied are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Both substances interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), but have very different effects.

The ECS regulates the central nervous system (CNS). As the pain message is transmitted from one neuron to another, scientists want to find out how the ECS strengthens or weakens this message.

THC is mainly responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis: it gives us the feeling of high. The euphoric effects of THC can also be addictive in some people and cause other side effects such as anxiety, paranoia, dizziness, loss of coordination and increased heart rate.

On the other hand, CBD has no euphoric side effects - many studies have shown that it has anti-epileptic effects. This is in line with the idea that the ECS regulates the interaction between neurons and the CNS.

Simply put, CBD can affect all those conditions caused by the nervous system.

Benefits of CBD for Fibromyalgia

CBD reduces pain

There are several studies that have shown that CBD reduces chronic pain, such as that caused by fibromyalgia. In a study on joint pain, it was shown that there is a relationship between CBD and the ECS, which would demonstrate the analgesic properties of CBD.

CBD helps sleep

CBD has been shown to help you sleep better and longer, thanks to its calming and pain-relieving properties.

CBD reduces the symptoms of anxiety and depression

Several clinical studies and double-blind studies have shown that CBD is effective in relieving anxiety, depression and other neurological problems.

CBD is able to relieve the symptoms of depression by reducing inflammation in the brain - which is closely linked to depression.

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease that causes pain spread throughout the body, and is often accompanied by symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, depression, memory and concentration problems.

Fibromyalgia is not life-threatening, but it has a huge (physical and social) impact on those affected.

It is now clear that stress and depression play an important role in the development of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Each person suffers from different symptoms, which can be mild, moderate or severe. Symptoms may even disappear from time to time, it can take weeks, months or years for them to reappear.

The most common symptoms of fibromyalgia are:
  • Widespread pain
  • Sensitivity to cold, heat, light and odors
  • Feeling of extreme fatigue
  • Irregular sleep
  • Cognitive difficulties often referred to as "fibro-fog"
  • People with fibromyalgia often suffer from:
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
  • Migraine and headache
  • Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Skin problems
  • Causes of Fibromyalgia
We still don't know what causes fibromyalgia. But it seems that there are factors such as genetics, previous illnesses, injuries, emotional and physical stress at the base.

Possible Causes Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is more common in people with:
  • Family history of fibromyalgia
  • Physical or emotional injury or trauma
  • Viral diseases or infections
  • Lupus, ankylosing spondylitis (spinal arthritis) or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Anxiety, depression and emotional stress
  • Factors that exacerbate the pain of fibromyalgia:
  • Lack of sleep
  • Smoke
  • Overweight
  • Stress
How is fibromyalgia diagnosed?

Recently, new guidelines have been developed that follow simple and practical criteria for diagnosis, such as the following:
  • Widespread pain for more than three months
  • The severity of the symptom is established based on the feeling of fatigue, if you wake up not rested and if the cognitive function is impaired
  • The patient does not have an underlying disease, which would explain the symptoms
While there are no specific laboratory tests used to confirm a diagnosis, doctors may recommend blood tests, x-rays, and specialized CT scans, such as nuclear medicine and CT scans.

Fibromyalgia treatment advice

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Optimal sleep
  • Regular exercise
  • Balanced diet
  • CBD is also useful as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic, so it alleviates inflammation and pain related to fibromyalgia.

How Much CBD Should I Take?

The dose of CBD for fibromyalgia can vary greatly from one person to another. Everyone responds differently, so it's important to start with basic doses.

If you are using CBD for the first time, we recommend starting with the lowest dose, according to the instructions of the product you are using. Gradually increase it by 5-10 mg (two drops at a time), until you find the right dose for you.

Start with a low dose and increase it over time, so you will find the one that suits you without overdoing it and without incurring side effects, such as sedation or dry mouth.

Most people with fibromyalgia need a higher dose of CBD to benefit from it.

Keep a diary of your dosages, times and symptoms. It will help you determine the right dose for you more easily.

Fibromyalgia patients often take CBD oil in the form of drops under the tongue and / or apply a topical CBD cream or gel to the affected areas.

Is CBD Safe?

CBD is safe and well tolerated and rarely causes unwanted effects, even with high doses. Side effects, if any, tend to be mild (e.g. dizziness, dry mouth, or sedation).

It has been shown that one does not become tolerant to the compound, unlike other therapeutic options such as opioid drugs (such as oxycontin).

Please note: the research is based on the use of pure and high quality CBD oils, which do not contain additives or synthetic preservatives, such as ours that we sell on a pharmaceutical level.

Conclusion

Fibromyalgia can be a debilitating condition to live with and impairs the mental health and motivations of the affected person.

There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but there are several ways to better reduce and manage symptoms.

Further clinical studies are needed. However, according to research, CBD is a safe and effective treatment for relieving many of the symptoms associated with the condition. It can therefore significantly improve the quality of life.
